Okay, this is the deflowering article, it is however late and iam in no state to make any relevant comments on anything substantial but lets start with an easy one.
The world of cinema is something many of us love with a real passion, getting excited about movies months away, desperate to get any snipet of info we can to fuel are excitement. With the secrecy around many films being made this is often hard. Lets not even mention JJ Abrams. However that is discussion for another time. I want to discuss the videogame/movie adaptation. I can hear your groans. It is well documented and discussed that we are yet to see a videogame adaptation we can turn round and say "wow that was everything i wanted." The endless crap spurted out by Owe Boll makes us all want to strike him down, however why is it so hard? Iam asking you.
You can list the games outthere that make you sit back and gasp when the opening sequence begins. List the games the grab you by the balls and never let go. Iam going to refrain from listing games, let you pick what you feel fits. Yet we are still waiting on the videogame adaptation that makes you sit back and gasp or grab you by the balls. Yes there are many that are ok. Decent entertainment, but nothing more. Resident Evil, an opportunity to nail a zombie movie and have fun with some good characters. Reality was very different. It even had a token black guy in it.
Writing this iam really struggling to think of some of the films, they were so non-memorable. Max Payne was never going to be a great film, the game has a reasonable script but little more, except for its obvious innovation, thanks to the matrix. You can see how the boundaries between influence, gaming and movie sometimes become blurry. Max Payne was developed to be a film-noir game. Was it ever ment to be made into a movie. Was the game itself not pointing in that direction. Possible one of the first to do so. Please correct if iam wrong. Some of you will remember Farenheit. Very different concept for a game, it had many flaws but was damn fun. Perhaps more fun because you were thrown into a environment in which you had only so much control at times. The story took you by the hand and guided you. Not so much an argument between linear and non-linear but one between the boundaries of gaming and filmmaking?
Currently every comic book is being turned into a movie. Some hit or miss. I wont even talk about Batman, it speaks for itself. So why the struggle with games. Have the developers been trying to create games with movie scripts and characters straight out of the movies. Is this why reverting back to film is proving difficult. They are already bad movies perhaps? How we would all love to see solid snake slitting throats on the big screen, David Hayter playing snake iam sure you would agree. But thinking on it, would it be any good. Playing MGS4 was a incredible experience for me. The best attempt at creating a movie in which i control the characters. However would it not seem very corny on the big screen, or simply unbelievable. Would the script baffle us all even more than the game. How funny would it be to see Chiba crapping himself?
Games are a entity in themselves, trying to make movies out of them will probably always fail. Its negative on negative. Do i want to see a final fantasy film, not a chance. The game makes me feel every emotion that the best films have. The same with metal gear. In saying that i wont argue with many adaptations. They can be fun, easy to watch and can take up an evening. Well, an hour and a half at least.
I think my point is, should we make games into movies when they are already interactive movies. Are they not simply animated films that we can do what we want in. Will the boundaries collapse in the future, we can already make our own movies using computer games. Does the games industry have an opportunity to climb the ladder and stand side by side with the film industry in terms of influence and the joy it can bring?
This is perhaps confused and forgive my ramblings but i think there are so many branches to this and so many talking points. So please pick apart.
